Timing & Rythm
One of the most important keys to overall rythm is time signature, a numerical symbol which appears after the clef at the beginning of a piece of music.
Beats per measure
Quarter note beats

In this case, there are 4 beats per measue and each quarter note gets one beat. In this case, it is referred to as four-four time.

Pay close attention to this before beginning a piece of music because a slight change in the timing sequence can cause a drastic change to the rythm and melody.
